“If we all do a little, no one has to do a lot.”
- Catherine Clements, CAFE 180 founder and volunteer
We love food. We love our neighbors. And we’ve all relied on the kindness of others at certain times in our lives. We started CAFE 180 to share our love of food with everyone. For those who have enough, it’s a chance to eat well and do well. For those who are struggling, it’s a chance to eat well in a dignified manner. We’re not about handouts. We’re about giving people a hand up…
Our mission is to reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. At the cornerstone of all we do, is an idea we call “DIGNIFICATION”®. Not only do we serve up delicious food, we serve up respect, dignity and self sufficiency. Our goal is for everyone to leave nourished.
How CAFE 180 got its start
It all started when two friends met for lunch at SAME Cafe in Denver. Julie Mihevc and Catherine Clements had planned to talk about creating transitional housing in Englewood. But they became enthralled with the SAME Cafe concept: Anyone can eat, regardless of their ability to pay. Those who are unable to pay simply exchange their time and energy for a nutritious meal.
Already aware of the needs of the South Broadway community in Englewood, the pair knew bringing great food would provide the “hand up” this neighborhood needed.
The rest, as they say, is history
The idea took on a life of its own, with the right people presenting themselves at the right time – including co-founder Libby Whitmore. Libby brought the experience of running a large non profit program to the team.
